On Fat Thursday in 2024, Poles spent over 29 zloty, on average, at the pastry stores. It is over nine percent more than the previous year.
In Poland, Fat Thursday, known as Tłusty Czwartek, has been celebrated since the late Middle Ages and is a time for justified gluttony. Fat Thursday always falls on the last Thursday of the carnival, before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent.
In addition to jam, cream, and chocolate-filled doughnuts, known as pączki, thin strips of crispy pastry dough, known as faworki, are also consumed in huge amounts.
On this day, Poland goes doughnut hunting! Fat Thursday is considered one of the year's busiest days among bakers and confectioners.
