In 2022, the average price difference per pound between beef and plant-based alternatives in the food service segment in the United States amounted to 1.69 U.S. dollars. Plant-based beef alternatives costed more and were priced at around 6.7 U.S. dollars per pound, compared to the cost of beef which was around five U.S. dollars per pound. This disparity showed across the board, with plant-based alternatives costing more than animal-based meat in all categories.
How many people follow a vegetarian or vegan diet in the United States?
The dietary preferences of consumers in the United States varied across age groups. It was recorded that approximately seven percent of individuals aged between 18 and 19 followed a vegan diet. Similarly, seven percent of respondents within the same age group reported following a vegetarian diet. However, as the age of respondents increased to above 40 years old, the prevalence of vegan and vegetarian diets declined.
