In 2023, total tourism expenditure on shopping by Chinese visitors in Japan amounted to around 291.3 billion Japanese yen. Tourism consumption generated by Chinese travelers coming to Japan was, prior to the pandemic, the main pillar of the shopping segment in Japan's inbound tourism industry. Unlike most of the other countries, spending by Chinese visitors was significantly below pre-pandemic values in 2023.
