During a survey in April 2023, around 28 percent of current or former vegetarians stated that it would be morally acceptable for other people to eat chimpanzees. Among those consumers who have never been vegetarian, a clear gulf between a group of acceptable meat and unacceptable meat exists.
Animals that are morally acceptable to eat according to vegetarians and non-vegetarians in the United States in 2023
The overall sample size was 1,000 participants. Single survey answers will have roughly 500 responses, as only half of all options were presented to a single participant.
The original survey question was phrased as follows: "Setting aside your own dietary preferences, do you think it is morally acceptable or unacceptable for other people to eat the following animal under normal circumstances?"
