Economic losses due to climate change are estimated at 2,328 trillion U.S. dollars between 2025 and 2100 under a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario. If global temperature increase is limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius, climate change losses during the same period could be lowered to 1,062 trillion U.S. dollars. This would result in over 1,200 trillion U.S. dollars in avoided losses when comparison to the BAU scenario. Less than 300 trillion U.S. dollars of climate finance would be required worldwide between 2025 and 2050 for adaptation and mitigation, or roughly 20 percent of avoided losses.
Climate finance needs and estimated losses due to climate change worldwide from 2025 to 2100, by scenario
(in trillion U.S. dollars)
Estimated losses are based on direct economic impacts of increased weather-related and other uninsurable damages, increased production costs, productivity losses, and health costs. Not accounting for capital losses caused by stranded assets, losses to nature and biodiversity, or those from increased conflict and human migration.
