Opinion of central banks on whether blockchain has a future in payments after 2023
Central banks across the world were skeptical in 2023 on whether blockchain has a future part to play in the global payments industry. This is according to a survey held that year that asked representatives from central banks in both developed and emerging countries on whether they thought blockchain would be used in future payments systems. The vast majority of survey respondents were unsure. Likely, this is because the penetration of cryptocurrency within payments traffic of individual countries was very low in 2023. Roughly one out of four respondents still believed it would make a future impact, though. 15 percent of the respondents imagined domestic use cases for blockchain payments, against 13 percent who pictured cross-border solutions. CBDC, or central bank digital currencies, spring to mind here, but the CBDC penetration rate was also relatively low as of 2023.
