In 2023, total tourism expenditure on shopping by international visitors in Japan amounted to around 1.4 trillion Japanese yen. Tourism consumption generated by foreign travelers nearly disappeared with the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic as there were no inbound travelers to spend any money but recovered fully in 2023. The expenditure on shopping declined, mostly due to the strong decline of Chinese tourists who were the backbone of the segment priorly.
