In 2023, the primary factor contributing to soil degradation in Italy was erosion, resulting from both natural and artificial causes. Loss of organic matter was the second main cause of soil degradation. Climate change-induced high temperatures and floods, as well as agricultural land use, contribute to the loss of SOC.
