Several local councils in England have run into severe financial difficulties in recent times. Between 2018 and 2023 there have been 12 Section 114 notices issued by eight different councils, the most recent of which was Nottingham City Council on November 29, 2023. A section 114 notice, while not technically a bankruptcy, is an admission that the relevant council can't fulfill its spending commitments based on its income.
