Microsoft and Meta have each purchased a high number of H100 graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia. In 2023, it was estimated that both companies had received 150,000 H100 GPUs, way ahead of the likes of Google and Amazon in terms of order numbers.
Training large language models
The favored chips to help power the AI revolution have been Nvidia’s A100 and its successor, the H100. Nvidia’s GPUs have been used to train and run various large language models, including ChatGPT. The system, developed by OpenAI, was trained using thousands of Nvidia GPUs, linked together in an AI supercomputer belonging to Microsoft.
From gaming to AI giant
Capitalizing on the AI boom has helped to propel Nvidia into third spot among tech companies in terms of market capitalization, valuing the company in excess of two trillion U.S. dollars. Nvidia's business originally had a focus on chips for the gaming market, although it has been transformed by the demands posed by the AI revolution.
