U.S.: average daily walking trips per 100 people by state 2022

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, a significant decline in walking activity has been observed in the United States. As of 2022, the District of Columbia had the lead with an average of 42 walking trips being taken daily by each 100 people. New York comes close in second with 38 trips per 100 people. The variation is quite significant with the Alabama, Arkansas, and Tennessee coming in last with 16 trips per 100 people each, which is about two-and-a-half times less than that seen in the District of Columbia.

This is the latest reported data in a trend of decline in walking activity, where some areas have witnessed declines of up to nearly 50 percent since 2019 before the pandemic.
