Ridership of light rail systems worldwide 2019, by region

In 2019, Europe held the largest share in terms of ridership of light rail transit (LRT) vehicles with around 10 billion passengers. This is in stark contrast with Africa which saw only 37 million passengers despite having nearly double the population of Europe.

As of 2021, over 400 cities worldwide have developed functioning LRT systems. This represents an upswing in the number of worldwide LRT systems and vehicles in use after a long period of decline during the second half of the 20th century.
