Fossil fuels are a major source of air pollution. An estimated 85 percent of nitrogen oxides originate from fossil combustion in polluting sectors like power, industry, and transportation. Fossil fuel combustion is also a significant source of black carbon, a component of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that is also a powerful climate change driver.
