According to a survey conducted in July 2023, a few days after the fatal shooting of Nahel Merzouk by a police officer and after the riots which mostly happened in suburban areas of Paris, French respondents were not particularly sympathetic to these riots. Indeed, only eight percent of those surveyed fully understood why they were occurring. On the opposite side, 59 percent of the respondents did not understand at all why riots were breaking out in the suburbs.

The source adds the following information: On June 27th, 17-year-old Nahel M. was killed by a police officer during a traffic stop, even though he had no driver's license. Two investigations have been opened, one for resisting arrest and attempted homicide of a public official, and the other for intentional homicide. Following this event, riots broke out in a number of French cities.
