The United States contributed roughly 17 percent of global warming from 1850 to 2021. By contrast, India contributed five percent of warming during this period, despite the country having a far larger population than the United States. In total, G20 countries have contributed approximately three-quarter of global warming to date.

Historic contributions to warming result from cumulative CO₂ emissions, but also estimated CH4, N₂O and F-gas emissions (cooling from aerosols is excluded, leading to a higher estimate of warming than currently observed). Totals are not complete for all categories and exclude, for example, international transport.
