It was estimated that in the period from 2017 to 2021, around 30 percent of veteran men in the United States with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 to <35 (obese) had arthritis, compared to 20 percent of veteran men who were underweight or of healthy weight. This statistic displays the percentage of veterans in the United States with diagnosed arthritis in 2017-2021, by gender and body mass index.

"Respondents were classified as having arthritis if they
answered “yes” to the question, “Has a doctor, nurse, or other
health professional ever told you that you had some form of
arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia?”
Respondents were classified as veterans if they answered “yes”
when asked, “Have you ever served on active duty in the
United States Armed Forces, either in the regular military or
in a National Guard or military reserve unit?”"
The calculated variable for BMI [weight (kg) / (height [m2])] was used to create the following four categories: underweight/healthy weight (<25.0), overweight
(25.0 to <30.0), obesity I (30.0 to <35.0), and obesity II (≥35.0).
