On December 14, 2023, auction house Sotheby's sold a set of six World Cup soccer jerseys by Argentina's men's national football team captain Lionel Messi for 7.8 million U.S. dollars. This was the third most valuable auction sale of sports jerseys to date, behind Diego Maradona's “Hand of God” shirt and Michael Jordan's game-worn jersey in Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals.
