Mexico: Tequila agave area cultivated and harvested in 2023, by state
In 2023, the area cultivated with agave tequilero, that is agave for tequila, in Mexico reached over 214 thousand hectares. About 132.9 thousand were cultivated in the state of Jalisco. Ranking second was the state of Guanajuato, with over 51 thousand hectares cultivated with agave tequilero. For contrast, only about 26.3 thousand hectares were harvested in the whole country that year.
Agave needs at least between six and eight years to fully mature, after which it can be harvested. That year, Jalisco produced over one million metric tons of agave tequilero.
