In the 2021/22 school year, 30,763 children in Israel were active soccer athletes. This was the most popular sport among Israeli youth that year. Soccer was followed by basketball, with 26,926 active players. In judo and gymnastics, there were 3,685 and 3,530 active competitors respectively.

An active athlete is defined as an athlete who participated in a certain minimum of competitions the year. The required number of competitions depends on the field. Additionally, an upper threshold of year of birth is applied. Only those born before a certain year are considered an active athlete. The threshold also depends on the specific sport.
