Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is amongst the most fatal air pollutants worldwide. In 2021, exposure to PM2.5 concentrations above WHO guidelines was attributable to more than 5,000 premature deaths in Belgium. Meanwhile, exposure to high concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) led to an additional 1,400 premature deaths in the European country that year.

*** Acute exposure to O₃.
Attributable deaths are deaths statistically attributable to exposure to a risk factor, e.g. air pollution. The attribution is based on the evidence from studies for the causal link between a risk factor and a health outcome leading to death. Attributable deaths are considered preventable if their cause can be eliminated.
