The share of cash in Australia declined by 18 percent between 2018 and the second quarter of 2024. This is according to two different questions asked throughout multiple surveys from Statista's Consumer Insights. The numbers shown here refer to a rolling 12-month share of respondents who indicated they used cash in a brick and mortar shop or whilst shopping online. In 2018, the share of respondents using cash transactions at POS (Point-of-Sale) stood at 77 percent, which declined to 59 percent in the second quarter of 2024. On the other hand, cash paid in advance for online payments surged from seven percent to 11 percent during the same period. Moreover, the share of respondents paying through cash on delivery stayed about the same, in the range of 12 to 15 percent.

Supplementary notes
The questions were phrased by the source as follows: "How have you paid in stores, restaurants and other points of sale in the past 12 months? (multi-pick)" and "How have you conducted payments online in the past 12 months? (multi-pick)".
Some countries in Statista's Consumer Insights are part of an extended questionnaire. More information on the methodology can be found here.
For countries/territories receiving the extended questionnaire, Statista's Consumer Insights utilizes a rolling survey system with four survey waves per year: The most recent data set contains the interviews of the last 12 months. This ensures trend stability and more interviews available for analysis.
