In 2023, the combined annual carbon dioxide emissions from energy use of the Nordic countries reached the lowest figure in the past three decades, at 132.3 million metric tons (MtCO₂). In comparison to a decade earlier, this represented a decline of 26 percent. Sweden was the largest emitter in the region in 2023, emitting roughly 35.8 MtCO₂.
Carbon dioxide emissions from energy in the Nordic countries from 1990 to 2023
(in million metric tons)
According to the source, the carbon emissions in this statistic reflect only those through consumption of oil, gas and coal, and are based on standard global average conversion factors. This does not allow for any carbon that is sequestered, for other sources of carbon emissions, or for emissions of other greenhouse gases.
