In 2022, the Indian state of Maharashtra had the highest gross premium paid under the Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme during the kharif season, reaching over 1.2 billion India rupees. It was followed by the states of Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand.

WBCIS aims to provide insurance protection to farmers against adverse weather conditions like deficit and excess rainfall, high or low temperature, humidity, etc., which can negatively impact crop production.
