Global carbon dioxide emissions from coal combustion in the electricity and heat sector increased by more than 20 percent between 2010 and 2022 to reach 10.9 billion metric tons (GtCO₂). Under the IEA's Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2050 scenario, coal-fired emissions would fall to just over 40 MtCO₂ by 2040. This pathway would require the phase-out of unabated coal by 2040.
