As of 2022, some 43 million metric tons of carbon dioxide were captured by CCUS worldwide from fossil fuels and industrial processes. Should all announced CO₂ capture capacity be realized, this total would increase to 759 million metric tons by 2030. Of this total, a quarter would be captured from the industry sector. In the NZE Scenario, CCUS would account for roughly eight percent of total CO₂ reductions from 2022 through to 2050.
Projected total carbon dioxide (CO₂) captured by carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) from fossil fuels and industrial processes worldwide in the Net Zero Scenario from 2022 to 2050, by sector
(in million metric tons of carbon dioxide)
