As of July 2023, the operational capacity of coal-fired power plants in Italy amounted to over six gigawatts, while almost seven gigawatts of coal-fired plants had been cancelled or retired since the beginning of the century. Between 2021 and 2022, the electricity production from coal in Italy grew to over 22.6 terawatt-hours.
