In 2023, about 90 percent of all mezcal was produced in the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Ranking second with just under five percent was the state of Puebla. That year, Mexico's mezcal production reached over 12 million liters.

The source adds the following information: "As the data is from the CRM, these figures only include certified mezcal. There is still no official tracking of the destilados de agave numbers and this doesn’t include other denominations like Sotol or Raicilla."
