Digital device ownership in the U.S. 2024

A 2024 survey conducted in the United States revealed that 97.6 percent of respondents owned a smartphone, while around 48.5 percent of them claimed to have a tablet. By contrast, only 26.7 percent of respondents said to have a smart home device.

Consumer electronics (CE) is flourishing in the U.S.

Offering a wide range of home and personal devices for communication and entertainment purposes, the consumer electronics market is one of the major technology industries in the world, including in the United States. In the North American country, the CE market is forecast to generate revenues of almost 160 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, a value expected to increase in the coming years. The industry encompasses many segments, including smartphones, TVs, wearables, and extended reality (XR) devices. Smartphones are the most popular devices among consumers, with the number of unit shipments expected to reach over 118 million in 2024.

Apple at the top of the American CE market

Because of its many submarkets, numerous companies are part of the consumer electronics industry worldwide. In the United States, the tech giants Apple and Samsung rule over the market. For instance, Apple commanded over half of the American smartphone market in 2023, while Samsung accounted for less than one-third. Similarly, Apple dominates the American tablet industry, with Samsung and Amazon holding lower shares of the market.
