Between January 1991 and September 2023, the percentage change in freight index expenditure fluctuated extensively. The largest percentage change in freight spending, as determined by Cass Information Systems, was between July 2008 and June 2009, where freight expenditure lessened from a 9.7 percent increase to minus 29.4 percent over the eleven month period.

Data within the Index includes all domestic freight modes and is derived from 36 million invoices and $44 billion in spend processed by Cass annually on behalf of its client base of hundreds of large shippers.
