In a survey conducted in January 2023 in India, majority of respondents below 50 years old preferred multiple payment options for public transit. Close to 60 percent of respondents above 50 years old preferred single payment option. Payment options in Indian public transit include cash, debit card, credit card, smartphone, and in some cities, Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPIs).
