Five private western oil and gas companies are projected to emit almost 900 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂) in 2050. This is more than 30 times more CO₂ than was emitted in 2021 by the five countries most affected by climate change. The biggest emitter is projected to be ExxonMobil, with almost 300 MtCO₂. 2050 is the year in which many countries around the world have pledged to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.
