Number of e-bikes Germany 2013-2023

In 2023, there were around 11 million e-bikes in Germany. This was an increase compared to the year before. Figures grew annually during the specified timeline.

A new trend

E-bikes have become increasingly popular in Germany, offering older adults in particular the opportunity to stay active and cover longer distances by bike. Over the past 10 years, e-bike sales have surged by more than 400 percent, as of 2023. In that year alone, approximately 2.12 million e-bikes were sold in Germany, placing the country firmly in first place for electric bike sales in Europe, by a significant margin. 

Cycling tourists

Southern Germany, with its proximity to the Alps, yet relatively flat and bike-friendly terrain, remains a favorite destination for cycling tourists. The e-bike trend has also taken hold among these tourists, with over 43 percent opting for electric assistance on their rides. Despite this, standard trekking bikes remained the top choice in 2023, with over 50 percent preferring the non-assisted option. However, it is likely that e-bikes will surpass them in popularity in the coming years, if the trend continues to grow at the same pace.
