United States: green cards granted to Asians 1820-2019, by country and decade

In the late 20^th century, the number of Asians obtaining permanent resident status in the U.S. rose significantly. For decades, migration from Asia had been blocked through the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which was implemented after an influx of Chinese immigrants in the middle of the century. The Act was then expanded to block almost all Asian migration in 1917, before the Immigration and Nationality Act then removed targeted restrictions. Since the 1950s, the Philippines (a former territory of the United States) has been the largest country of origin for Asian immigrants, while migration from India and China, the world's most populous countries, has also been high.
