In 2023, around 12 million hectares of tree cover were lost worldwide due to fires, of which around 81 percent were boreal forests. Boreal forests, also known as taiga, are the northernmost forests on Earth, covering land across Alaska, Canada, northern Europe, and Russia. Russia and Canada were the two countries with the highest average forest lost by fires in 2023.
