The sector that has observed the largest overall percentage increased in methane emissions in Brazil since 1990 is the power industry. While this increase is far higher than any other sector, the power industry is a minor source of methane in Brazil when compared to the agriculture sector, which is by far the largest source of methane in the country.
Change in methane (CH4) emissions in Brazil from 1990 to 2022, by sector
(in percent)
Figures were calculated by Statista using data provided by the source
Figures aggregated using Global Warming Potential values from IPCC AR5 (GWP-100 AR5).
Power Industry - Power and heat generation plants (public & autoproducers)
Industrial combustion - Combustion for industrial manufacturing
Buildings – Small scale non-industrial stationary combustion
Transport – Mobile combustion (road & rail & ship & aviation)
Agriculture Agricultural soils, crop residues burning, enteric fermentation, manure management
Fuel exploitation - Production, transformation and refining of fuels
Processes - Industrial processes (e.g. emissions from the production of cement, iron and steel, aluminum, chemicals, solvents, etc.)
Waste - Solid waste disposal and waste water treatment
