All sectors in India have observed an overall increase in methane emissions since 1990. India's waste-related methane emissions were 88 percent higher in 2022 when compared to 1990 levels, and 34 percent higher when compared to 2005 levels. In 2022, there were almost 150 major methane leaks at waste sites in India.
