Methane emissions from industrial combustion and processes in the United States increased 61 percent between 1990 and 2022. In contrast, transportation-related methane emissions were 71 percent lower in 2022 when compared to 1990 levels, and 61 percent lower when compared to 2005 levels.
Change in methane (CH4) emissions in the United States from 1990 to 2022, by sector
(in percent)
Figures were calculated by Statista using data provided by the source
Figures aggregated using Global Warming Potential values from IPCC AR5 (GWP-100 AR5).
Power Industry - Power and heat generation plants (public & autoproducers)
Industrial combustion - Combustion for industrial manufacturing
Buildings – Small scale non-industrial stationary combustion
Transport – Mobile combustion (road & rail & ship & aviation)
Agriculture Agricultural soils, crop residues burning, enteric fermentation, manure management
Fuel exploitation - Production, transformation and refining of fuels
Processes - Industrial processes (e.g. emissions from the production of cement, iron and steel, aluminum, chemicals, solvents, etc.)
Waste - Solid waste disposal and waste water treatment
