According to a survey conducted in July 2022 in Japan, public institutions were the main providers of child care for married women when they went to work. Around 45 percent of married women reported asking public institutions such as nursery schools to provide child care support when they went to work, while over 30 percent asked their parents for help.
Most important sources of long-term support for child care in Japan in 2022
Original question: "Who (where) have you consulted or asked for help in the following situations? Please choose up to two (or up to four for a to c) from the options below in order of priority."
Questionnaires were distributed in person and, in exceptional cases, mailed to absent households. Completed questionnaires were collected in person or submitted by mail or via the online survey system of the government.

Daytime care on weekdays of the first child (until the age of one): n=3,144
Daytime care on weekdays of the first child (between the age of one to three): n=3,127
Care for children when wife goes to work: n=2,366
Care for children when wife is nursing/caregiving: n=2,132
