According to the Bertelsmann Transformation Index (BTI), the degree of freedom of expression prevalent in India has steadily declined since 2014. As of 2024, the South Asian democracy scored four on a scale of ten in this aspect. An increasing trend of censorship of government critics including news outlets and social media platforms has emerged since 2014.
