Coal mine methane emissions and abatement potentials worldwide in 2022, by measure

In 2022, some 40 million metric tons of coal mine methane (CCM) were released worldwide. Steam coal and lignite accounted for roughly three quarters of this total. Abating methane from ventilation systems through measures such as oxidation could avoid roughly 12 million metric tons of CCM. Globally, an estimated 50 percent of CCM can be abated with mitigation measures.
