The number of terrorist attacks registered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo rose sharply from 2018 to 2021. There were nearly 900 attacks in 2021, compared to less than 200 in 2018. The sharp increase underlines the worrying trend of increasing terrorist activity in the country over the last years, particularly in Eastern Congo. The Islamic State stood behind more than 300 of the attacks in 2021.
