Battery manufacturing capacity worldwide 2023, by market
In 2023, the global battery manufacturing capacity was around 2.2 terawatt hours. Over 80 percent came from China, which took the lead in this sector. According to a recent forecast on battery manufacturing, China is expected to maintain its top position in the forthcoming decade, reaching a capacity of four terawatt-hours by 2030, followed by the United States.
Battery capacity in Europe
Together with China and the United States, the European region had one of the largest battery manufacturing capacities as of 2023. In that year, the region had an installed battery storage capacity of almost 36 gigawatt-hours. Germany was the biggest market in Europe, possessing a third of the region’s battery capacity.
Battery storage companies worldwide
The major battery energy storage companies are headquartered in China and the U.S., the leading countries in the sector. Among the publicly traded battery energy producers, the U.S.-based Tesla and China-based CATL were the companies with the largest market capitalization as of June 2023. In contrast, the major EV battery manufacturers in the world were all located in East Asia, and CATL dominated the market with an installed capacity of over 240 gigawatt-hours.
