An estimated 65 percent of global coal sector emissions were attributable to Scope 3 categories in 2021. The majority of coal sector emissions come from the combustion of sold products by customers. Scope 3 emissions are not produced by a company, but generated up and down the company’s value chain. Coal emissions are a major contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions.

Scope 1: direct greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions a company generates. Scope 2: indirect GHG emissions a company generates, such as buying energy/electricity for heating and cooling buildings. Scope 3: emissions generated up and down the company’s value chain, excluding indirect emissions from the generation of purchased or acquired energy consumed by the reporting company, which are accounted under Scope 2.
