As of 2023, over half of all retail investors surveyed in the United States were unsure of how to define an environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) strategy. Almost 28 percent of investors perceived an ESG strategy to be a strategy that forgoes financial gain or risk reduction for the company in favor of non-financial goals, while less than seven percent saw no correlation between ESG strategies and a company's risk or financial return.
