In 2021, over two-thirds of self-employed business owners in Israel who are men did not hold an academic degree. On the other hand, 31 percent of male owners of proprietorship businesses held an academic degree. The reports mention that 428,000 of the 443,000 active self-employed businesses had available data on the level of education of their respective owners.

The report defines a holder of an academic degree as a person who received an academic degree in Israel starting in the early 1980s, or who obtained an academic degree abroad that was recognized by the Ministry of Education in the country.
