In 2023, a survey on coffee consumption trends conducted in Indonesia found that over half of respondents of all ages preferred buying coffee in the form of powdered sachets from small shops, commonly referred to as "warung," or from minimarkets and supermarkets. The next most favored option for coffee purchases among Gen Z and Millennials was ready-to-drink coffee in bottles or cans from minimarkets and supermarkets.
A shift in Indonesia’s coffee drinking culture
Before the rise of café culture, instant coffee or ground coffee has been the go-to option for coffee drinkers in Indonesia. Instant coffee provides a quick and convenient way to enjoy a cup of coffee and is affordable for all. Good day, Nescafe, Luwak White Coffee, and Kapal Api are some of the ground coffee brands popular among coffee lovers in Indonesia. While ground coffee continues to be a favorite, it has become increasingly common for Indonesians to visit coffee shops and cafés during the week. This deepening café culture has further boosted coffee consumption in the country.
Indonesia's coffee production and market
Indonesia is a leading global coffee producer and exporter, with coffee harvesting areas ranking second only to Brazil. Annually, Indonesia produces over 750,000 metric tons of high-quality Arabica and Robusta beans, which are highly sought after in international markets. The United States is a primary export destination for Indonesian coffee, highlighting the strong global demand for it.
