European Union transportation sector greenhouse gas emissions increased by 24 percent between 1990 and 2019, before plummeting 14 percent in 2020 due to a dramatic reduction in transport activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Preliminary estimates indicate that emissions rebounded in 2021, and increased a further 2.6 percent in 2022 to 803 MtCO₂e.
Projections show that EU transportation sector emissions would remain four percent above 1990 levels by 2030, with existing measures (WEM). With additional measures (WAM), emissions wouldn't drop below 1990 levels until 2029.
Greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector in European Union from 1990 to 2022, with projections to 2040, by scenario
(in million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent)
WEM = Projections 'with existing measures' WAM = Projections 'with additional measures'. The 'with existing measures' scenario reflects existing policies and measures, whereas the 'with additional measures' scenario considers the additional effects of planned measures reported by Member States.
