The final energy consumption of the European Union's transportation sector was 274.8 million metric tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe) in 2021. The outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent restrictions on travel caused EU transportation energy consumption to drop 13 percent in 2020. Although energy consumption rebounded sharply in 2021, it remained well below pre-pandemic levels. The transportation sector accounts for nearly 30 percent of final energy consumption in the EU.

Final energy consumption is the energy finally consumed in the transport, industrial, commercial, agricultural, public and household sectors. It excludes deliveries to the energy transformation sector and to the energy industries themselves, along with energy consumption in international maritime and air transport.
