In a study conducted in Nigeria in 2023, most respondents having malaria symptoms across all age groups, and who had reported that they went to a hospital, a pharmacy, a chemist's shop, or bought drugs, considered that they did a lab test to confirm the case. However, 20 percent of the respondents between ages 18 and 35 years revealed that they had no test done but did a self-diagnosis.
Malaria is a dangerous disease transmitted to humans by mosquitoes that bear the malaria parasite. In 2020, Nigeria registered some 21.6 million cases of malaria.
