Based on a study conducted in Nigeria in 2023, most respondents having malaria symptoms who reported that they went to a hospital, a pharmacy, a chemist's shop, or bought drugs, considered that they did a lab test to confirm the case, while 18 percent of the respondents revealed that they did a self-diagnosis. Only eight percent reported neither doing a test nor a self-diagnosis.
Malaria is a dangerous disease transmitted to humans by mosquitoes that bear the malaria parasite. In 2020, Nigeria registered some 21.6 million cases of malaria.
